Have you ever found yourself in a situation and wondered why you were ever in that situation in the first place? This happened to me several years ago when I was on a cruise and my wife decided that it would be a good idea if she did some parasailing. I don’t even remember exactly which island we were in, but it was somewhere in the Caribbean. The water was beautiful and the weather was perfect, but I had some serious doubts about the security of the equipment that they were using.
The people that owned the parasailing boats were kind enough to take me out as well so that I could get some good pictures and a little bit of video footage while she was off on her adventure. I have to admit, it did look like a lot of fun when I was sitting in the boat but I have been afraid of heights for my entire life and I thought that I could never see myself doing something so daring. That was all about to change, however, as she had the time of her life and was very convincing whenever she was finally back on the boat again (safely I might add).
With a little bit of coaxing from my wife and a lot of good humored ribbing from the boat crew, I finally decided to get strapped in and try it out for myself. It wasn’t until I was about halfway up in the air that I began looking at the equipment to each side of me, realizing exactly how little it would take for it to fail. As I entered the height of the parasailing adventure, the thought of falling into the water from several hundred feet certainly did not appeal to me, but I decided to enjoy it a little bit.
There is something about being up in the air whenever you are parasailing that takes all of your troubles away. The world, from that height, is a much quieter place and looking down over the crystal blue Caribbean waters is something that I will never be able to get out of my mind, and would never want to. They began to pull me in and did the customary dip in the water before finally bringing me back onto the boat in a very safe and professional manner.
Since that time, I have gone parasailing many times and have even allowed myself to go to greater heights whenever doing so on Lake Tahoe. Although it is not something that I have the opportunity to do frequently, it is something that I have come to love. All of this is very strange to me, however, because I still get dizzy whenever I’m standing on top of a ladder but when I am up at the end of the parasailing chain, I don’t have a fear in the world. As a matter of fact, it is a world to me that is completely free of fear and one that I enjoy doing whenever possible.
